Movie Short Summary: Monk is a frustrated novelist who's fed up with the establishment that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, he uses a pen name to write an outlandish Black book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.
Here is another gem of a movie that’s sure to make you laugh and think. Allow me to present American Fiction, a 2023 Oscar-winning film (Best Adapted Screenplay) starring none other than the incredibly talented Jeffrey Wright, who was also a 2023 Academy Award nominee for Best Actor. If you’ve enjoyed his stellar performances in Westworld, Asteroid City, and The Batman, you’re in for a treat!
American Fiction is a satirical comedy-drama that follows the life of a frustrated writer, portrayed brilliantly by Wright. He’s caught in the whirlwind of family drama while challenging an industry obsessed with celebrating offensive tropes through lucrative deals. The film is the directorial debut of Cord Jefferson, the creative genius behind shows like The Watchmen, The Good Place, and Master of None.
